Day 7 - A Picture of Something That Has Made an Impact on You
Runners World Magazine
All through high school, I was average. Not thin, but not fat. I didn't have great eating habits nor did I exercise, but I was a size 8 and happy with it. Then college happened. Cafeterias happened...all you can eat un-healthy food that you didn't have to ask your parents whether you could have it or not because it was all paid for. Then being in a sorority happened where meal plans were included in our dues. Then having a part time job happened. Basically, I had little time or motivation to prepare healthy meals, and it cought up to me.
Eventually, my size 12 jeans were too small....and I didn't want to go buy new ones, so I decided something had to change. I traded going out after work for getting up in the morning to go to the gym and use the elliptical. My daily schedule now looked something like this:
5:45 am : Gym
9:00 am : Class
2:00 pm : Work
10:00 pm : Off Work
11:15 pm : Bed
Thats a long day! Not to mention studying, homework and various sorority committments. But fitting in the extra time to work out made me feel fantastic. I started to eat better...feel happier...be a better person in general. After I had lost about 30 pounds, I felt like I could do anything. Instead of just being "healthy", I wanted to something I had never been. I wanted to be athletic! So I marched myself upstairs at the gym to go run on the indoor track. 8 Laps = 1 mile. I think I made it maybe 1 before I was out of breath and dying. But, I continued on, and soon enough, I could do 2 or three miles in the air-conditioned flat gym.
Then I graduated and I was too poor to afford a gym membership. Being the cheap person I am, I said to myself, "You can run anywhere, that's free! Just buy shoes!" I bought some New Balance's more because they were cute than any other reason, put on my cotton soffe shorts and t-shirt and hit the pavement. Running outside was a completly different animal. There was wind resistance, changes in pavement and elevation, dogs barking at you, people to say hello to, and weather to ajust to. Three miles was about my limit.
My weight loss was now about 40 pounds and I was a size 2! I was ecstatic! Then one day, I was talking to my boyfriend of the time and told him, "I think I wanna run a marathon or something one day" to which he responded, "Only fat girls who get skinny do that". Inside I was pretty upset...after all...I had wanted to make a change and I had done that...that's not an easy thing to do! Didn't he know that getting to the point I was at was hard work? And if I could do that then why couldn't I continue to make myself better? I said, "I guess," and the conversation moved on.
I started a new job and realized there was another person in my office who ran...but not like me. I ran three miles and huffed and puffed and stopped to walk. This guy ran marathons...like....26.2 miles! Crazy! I also broke up with my boyfriend, and needed something to keep my mind off of him, so my coworker suggested I train for a Half Marathon. 13.1 Miles. At the time that was a big scary feat. But, each step of the way he encouraged me, and helped me make good decisions, and come race day, I was prepared and in better shape than ever!
Fast foreward. February 13, 2011 I ran a full marathon! That crazy 26.2 mile distance I first mentioned in 2008. I followed a training schedule, ate well, took care of my body, and finished strong! It may have been the most challenging thing I've ever done and I am overjoyed that I did. And I plan to do it again. Probably more than one more time.
Running gives me more than I could ever ask for from a hobby, especially marathon training. I know what my goal is, and I know that in order to achieve that goal I need to put in the time and effort. Sure, I was nervous days before the race, but in my heart I knew that I had done everything I needed to already. All that was left was getting to the start line. Running gives me focus to meet goals. Running lets me have time alone in nature; a way to see the world differently. I know more about Baton Rouge neighborhoods than I ever thought I would, because when you run 20 miles through your city, you just tend to pick up on things you can't in a car. I know where my favorite piece of sidewalk is in the Garden District, I know the house with the firetruck always has music on on Sunday mornings and I know when I turn onto Belmont that I'm almost back to the lakes(only 3 more miles till I'm finished!)! Starting to run is the best thing I could have ever done for myself.
Spiderman? Batman? Wonderwoman? Pshh. Space Ghost is where it's at...but not 1960's SG, 2000 SG. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" was an animated talk show on Cartoon Network during their Adult Swim lineup, where the cast of the old superhero show would interview famous people...well..mildly famous most of the time. I found this cartoon to be hilarious and have only met three other people who share my deep love for SG. Half of the random things I say come from this television series. I love you SG!
So, quick story about the title. My co-workers daughter came to work with him today. I'm pretty close to their family, so she came up to me and showed me that she put all the green crayons together. So I asked her if she had an Asparagus Green? She looked and said yes. Then I asked her if she had an Ultra Green(what flourescent green used to be called when I was little) and she said, "Ultra Green? Michelob Ultra Green?". Sigh, I love this child. : )
Last September, my mother got press credentials to shoot Slash in Atlanta. I felt the need for a vacation, so decided to tag along. We spent one day in Macon, one day in Savannah, and one day in Atlanta. I will admit that Atlanta was my favorite, but Savannah was pretty. We spent the day walking around all the squares(it was HOT during the day!) ate lunch at the Moon River Brewing Company and then drove back to our hotel.

My absolute favorite part of Savannah was Papillote. I'm no macaron officianado, but I desperatly wanted to try theirs...so desperate that we walked all the way down Broughton street the wrong way(closest to our car), then walked all the way back in the 90-something-degree weather because I simply couldn't pass them up. I tried the raspberry and apricot, and both were stellar. The person working behind the counter(I think it was the owner) was extremly helpful. I also ordered tea, which was quite refreshing after our long day walking around in the hot sun and my mother just wanted water which was delivered in a large glass bottle. Such a great little touch!
If you're ever in Savannah, or anywhere near there for that matter, do stop in! You will definitely be impressed.
I wish I didn't worry about getting fat every time I complete a running training schedule.
I wish I washed my face before bed.
I wish I didn't procrastinate so much.
But, I generally like myself, so these things I often let slide.
Speaking of procrastinating, I'm working on my letters for the pen pal project over at Get the Words Out! Amidst writing 1-2 letters a week, also sent out a postcard for my PostCrossing account, which I purchased from the Kristin Lee Cards. She does all of her own rubber stamping for her cards, has fast shipping, and a great personality. Here are a few of my favorites, all found at her etsy shop. Check her out!
Well...I don't really like my blog name. I thought of it because I am a small person...and this is a small blog...thus...Brandi-Sized.
Anyways, since that was so uninteresting, I'll move on. Look!!
I was awarded a Stylish Blogger award from One Step at a Time!! Thanks so much, Tasia! Go check her out!
The rules for this award are simple. First, thank and link back to the person who gave you the award. Then share 7 things about yourself. And finally, tag 15 other bloggers and let them know that you've given them an award!
And now 7 more highly entertaining facts about myself:
My mom and my grandpa were born on the same day.
Both of my thumbnails are bumpy. Not ugly bumpy. But if you touch them, you notice a little wave action.
I might want BBQ for lunch today.
I may or may not go to see horse racing tomorrow at the track in New Orleans with my neighbor Julie.
My favorite color is gray...yep...just like the Counting Crows.
My ankle kind of hurts today. I guess thats what I get for running 26.2 miles.
I still have no idea what I'm doing with this whole blogging thing, but hopefully I'll learn more.
Who to tag, who to tag? I'm just making my debut in blogland, so I'm sure no one knows who I am, but I'm going to go ahead and tag some of my favorite ladies. I def don't have fourteen, but here's to : Brandilyn, Brittni, Caroline(whom I have the pleasure of knowing in real life!), Lindsay, Lyndsey, Sarah, & Tracy. You ladies are amazing!
Day 1- A Recent Picture of You and 15 Interesting Facts About Yourself
Well, here I am! This is me and my best friend, Courtney Marie over Christmas(I'm the one in pink). We used to be roommates in college and since she moved to New Orleans to be with her family and pursue her teaching career, we make an effort to see each other at least once a month...and I'm happy to say that we have only missed one or two months over the past two years!
1. So, did you hear about that new zodiac thing? I used to be a Virgo(born August 27) but with this new zodiac thing, I'm now a Leo...and I'm SO SO SO excited about it. Being a Leo fits me so much better!
2. I ran my first marathon last Sunday! I finished in 6:03:48...quite a bit slower than I should have and with a MUCH slower pace than any of my training runs. I only trained up to 20 miles, and those last 6.2 were the longest miles of my life. However, I did it & I'm so proud of myself!
4. I feel terribly out of place in the south sometimes. I do not see myself staying here forever. This October, I'm going on vacation to Boston, New Hampshire and Maine and I'm hoping that I like it.
5. I have two of the best Cocker Spaniels in the world, who I lovingly refer to as "The Bears". Genereal P.G.T. Beauregard...aka "Bubba Bear" is the one looking at the camera. Sasha Bear is the one trying to climb all over me. Beau is from the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas. Sasha was my foster for Cherished Cockers that I fell in love with. Courtney Marie and her fiancee were talking to me while she was my foster and jokingly said they wanted to adopt her. When my first thought was, "No! I love Sasha" I knew that if I didn't want my best friend to have her, I should adopt her.
6. I don't know how to ride a bicycle.
7. I buy fresh flowers for my condo at least once a month. They make everything more cheerful.
8. I love estate sales and Goodwill. Just yesterday I found a Banana Republic dress in my size AND petite for $4.99. Love!
9. I didn't have a laptop until last year...and the only reason I bought it was because I got tax credit money for purchasing my home....if you can't tell...I'm kind of cheap.
10. I just thought of this one. When I'm writing the numbers "1" -"10" on pen and paper, once I get to ten, I write the "0" before the "1". Weird huh? I also use scissors wrong and put my thumb where the other fingers should go and smoosh all my fingers in the thumb part.
11. I have a bachelors of science in Geography and a minor in History. Goooo geography! If I didn't have my current job, I would more than likely want to start teaching...but not geography...elementary ed.
12. I usually have messy hair, and I love it!
13. I consider myself creative, but I don't always have the motivation to BE creative.
14. I'm fairly competent at getting things done around my house. I've painted almost every room since I purchased it, and have started the process of sanding my stairsteps to stain them. Its going pretty slow though.
15. I try to eat mostly organically and healthy. I don't always succeed. I had nacho's for dinner last night. Not only is that not healthy, its not really dinner either. I will do better today and so forth!
Hi All! I want to get into blogging a little bit more, but have no idea where to start, so I am going to begin this little 30 day challenge. I found it here. It will begin tomorrow!
